If you are worried that your breasts do not look the way they used to, it is because they have changed from aging, pregnancy, or weight loss, causing sagging and a loss of natural firmness. Today, we are talking about Breast Lift (Mastopexy). Our medical team shares their expert insights and the signature techniques used at Rattinan Clinic to help you understand every step of the procedure.

What Is Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?

It is important to clarify that Breast Lift (Mastopexy) is not the same as Breast Augmentation. Instead, it is a surgical procedure focused on reshaping and repositioning your existing breast tissue to restore a firm, beautiful, and youthful appearance.

From our experiences, we’ve found that many women mistakenly believe they need “implants” to achieve a beautiful result. However, a breast lift is often the real solution, especially for those who already have enough breast tissue but simply want to restore it to its natural, appropriate position.

Causes of Sagging Breasts

First, let’s explore the causes behind these changes to better understand how a breast lift can address your specific concerns.

1. Aging

As we age, the skin and natural ligaments gradually weaken. Combined with a decrease in collagen, the breasts lose their elasticity and begin to sag over time.

2. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

During pregnancy, breasts expand in preparation for breastfeeding. Once it ends, breast volume often decreases, but the skin that was stretched typically does not regain its original firmness.

3. Rapid Weight Loss

Rapid weight loss causes fatty tissue in the breasts to diminish. However, the skin that has already been stretched often fails to retract to the body’s new proportions.

4. Genetics

Some individuals are genetically predisposed to have weaker skin or ligaments. This is a natural factor that is often unavoidable.

Grades of Breast Ptosis

Medically, breast ptosis is divided into 4 grades. These levels help our surgeons determine the most appropriate surgical technique to achieve optimal results.

Grade 0 (Normal)

The nipple is positioned above or at the same level as the inframammary fold.

Grade I (Mild Ptosis)

The nipple is at the level of the inframammary fold but remains higher than the lowest part of the breast.

Grade II (Moderate Ptosis)

The nipple sits below the inframammary fold but is still positioned above the lowest part of the breast.

Grades III (Severe Ptosis)

The nipple is at or below the lowest contour of the breast and is pointing downward.

Important: An accurate assessment of breast ptosis must be performed by an experienced surgeon, as every individual has a unique body shape and different proportions.

Breast Lift Surgery: Who Is and Is Not a Good Candidate?

Ideal Candidates for a Breast Lift

  • Those with any degree of sagging (Grades I-III) looking to restore firmness and lift.
  • Those with low-positioned nipples or areolas that are disproportionate to their body frame.
  • Those with enlarged areolas who wish to resize them for a more balanced look.
  • Those not looking to increase size but rather to improve the overall shape and contour.
  • Those with breast asymmetry who want to achieve a more balanced, even appearance.
  • Healthy individuals with no underlying medical conditions that could interfere with surgery.

Who Should Avoid a Breast Lift

  • Women who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding. It is recommended to wait at least 6 months after breastfeeding before considering surgery.
  • Those planning a pregnancy in the near future as significant weight changes during pregnancy can affect the long-term results.
  • Individuals with severe underlying health conditions, such as diabetes or uncontrolled hypertension.
  • Those with unrealistic expectations regarding the surgical outcomes.
  • Patients who smoke must quit smoking at least 4–6 weeks before surgery.

Crescent Lift Technique

Best for: Individuals with very mild sagging (Grade I).

This technique involves a small crescent-shaped incision above the nipple. While it results in very discreet scarring, its corrective capacity is limited, making it ideal for patients seeking minor adjustments.

Donut Lift Technique

Best for: individuals with mild to moderate sagging (Grade I–II).

A circular incision is made around the nipple, ensuring scars remain hidden at the border. It delivers better results than a Crescent lift while keeping scarring to a minimum.

Lollipop Lift Technique

Best for: Individuals with moderate sagging (Grade II).

The incision is shaped like a “lollipop,” consisting of a circle around the nipple and a vertical line extending down to the inframammary fold. This technique allows for significant reshaping and can effectively reduce the size of the areola.

Anchor Lift Technique

Best for: Individuals with severe sagging (Grade III).

This is the most versatile technique, with an anchor-shaped scar that follows the circle of the nipple, a straight line down, and a curve tucked into the fold under the breast. It is the best option for achieving a total transformation.

Dual Plane Technique (Breast Lift with Augmentation)

Best for: Individuals who want to both lift and increase breast size.

This procedure combines breast lift techniques with breast augmentation. It is ideal for individuals with significant sagging who also desire increased size.

What is the Difference Between a Breast Lift and Breast Augmentation?

This is one of the most common questions we receive during consultations. It is a crucial distinction to understand, as many patients are unsure which procedure will truly achieve their desired results.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

  • Focuses on reshaping and repositioning.
  • Uses existing breast tissue.
  • Does not increase breast size.
  • Ideal for those with sufficient tissue.
  • Reduced risk from foreign objects (no implants).

Breast Augmentation

  • Focuses on increasing size and volume.
  • Uses implants or fat grafting.
  • Increases breast size and fullness.
  • Ideal for those who want larger breasts.
  • Requires long-term monitoring.

Is It Possible to Combine a Breast Lift with Breast Augmentation?

Absolutely. This is what we refer to as the Dual Plane technique (the combined breast lift and augmentation mentioned earlier).

This approach is ideal for individuals who experience sagging but also desire increased volume. By performing the lift and placing the implants in a single procedure, we achieve a result that satisfies many of our patients in terms of both shape and size.

Advantages of Surgical Breast Lift

  • Long-Lasting and Visible Results: Significantly improves and restores the breast’s natural contour.
  • Customized Proportions: Surgeons can tailor the shape to perfectly complement each patient’s unique physique.
  • Integrated Nipple Correction: If the areolas are disproportionately large, they can be resized during the same procedure.
  • Corrects Asymmetry: Effectively balances the breasts to create a more symmetrical appearance.
  • Boosts Self-Confidence: Many patients experience a profound improvement in self-image following surgery.

Is a Non-Surgical Breast Lift Possible?

This is a very frequent question, as everyone hopes for great results without the need for surgery. However, we must be honest about the limitations of non-surgical breast lifting:

Limitations of Non-surgical Breast Lifting

  • Limited Results: Non-surgical methods offer only minor improvements.
  • Temporary Effects: The results are not permanent and will gradually fade over time.
  • Best for Mild Cases Only: These treatments are ineffective for Grade II or III ptosis.
  • Requires Maintenance: Frequent repeat sessions are necessary to maintain any visible results.
  • No Nipple Correction: These methods only tighten the skin.

Available non-surgical options include lasers, ultrasound energy devices, or Radiofrequency (RF). Their lifting results are very limited compared to a surgical procedure.

Limitations of Surgical Breast Lifting

To provide a balanced perspective, it is important to consider the limitations of a surgical approach:

  • Scarring: While we strive to minimize visibility, surgical incisions will result in scars.
  • Recovery Period: A recovery period of 2–4 weeks is required, during which specific precautions must be taken.
  • Surgical Risks: Although rare, this procedure carries the standard risks associated with any major surgery.
  • Higher Investment: Surgery involves a higher cost than non-surgical treatments.
  • Potential for Revision: In some cases, a secondary procedure may be necessary if the results do not meet expectations.

How Much Does a Breast Lift Cost?

The cost of a breast lift depends on several key factors:

  • The Technique Used: More complex surgical techniques generally involve a higher price point.
  • Case Complexity: Cases requiring advanced correction or longer operative time require specialized skills and resources.
  • Combined Procedures: Total costs will vary if the lift is performed alongside other treatments, such as breast augmentation.

How to Prepare for a Breast Lift Surgery

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications, such as Aspirin, at least 2 weeks before surgery.
  • Complete all general health assessments as recommended by your surgeon.
  • Prepare loose-fitting, easy-to-wear clothing for use after surgery.
  • Ensure you have a caregiver to assist you during the initial recovery period.
  • Follow your surgeon’s specific instructions regarding fasting before surgery.

Post-Operative Care After Breast Lift Surgery

  • Wear the medical-grade bra provided by the clinic or a wire-free support bra 24/7 for at least 6–8 weeks to prevent the incision from opening.
  • Keep the surgical area clean and dry. Avoid getting the incisions wet if they have been covered with waterproof medical tape.
  • Attend all scheduled follow-up visits to monitor your progress and receive professional guidance.
  • Get plenty of rest. Avoid sleeping on your side or stomach to prevent pressure on the breasts. For the first 2–3 weeks, sleep with your upper body elevated by 2–3 pillows to help reduce swelling.
  • Take all prescribed medications strictly as directed to manage pain and prevent potential infections.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms or complications.
  • Do not lift heavy objects or raise your arms high for the first 7 days, as this can cause inflammation.
  • Plan to rest at home for 2 weeks before returning to normal office work.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 4 weeks. However, light walking is encouraged early on to reduce the risk of blood clots.
  • Incisions may appear red or slightly raised for the first 1–3 months before fading between 6–12 months. Avoid direct sun exposure on the scars for 3–6 months.
  • Refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol for at least 4 weeks post-surgery to prevent complications during the healing process.
  • Maintain a nutritious diet and avoid high-sodium foods, which can worsen swelling. Increase your fiber intake and drink plenty of water.

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Lift Surgery

A breast lift can correct the following issues:

  • All levels of breast sagging (Grade I–III)
  • Low-positioned nipples
  • Disproportionately large nipples
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Stretched or loose breast skin

A breast lift offers excellent results for the right candidate, particularly for those with sagging but sufficient breast tissue. While the results are long-lasting, it is important for patients to be fully aware of the limitations and potential risks.

Recovery time varies depending on the surgical technique used:

  • Crescent / Donut Lift: 7–14 days
  • Lollipop Lift: 14–21 days
  • Anchor Lift: 21–28 days

Generally, most patients can return to work within 1–2 weeks. However, strenuous activities must be avoided for 4–6 weeks.

Most breast lift procedures are “Day Case” surgeries, allowing for same-day discharge. In more complex scenarios, a one-night stay may be recommended based on your health status and the surgical evaluation.

Scars from a breast lift will gradually fade over time:

  • Months 1–3: Scars typically appear red and are more prominent.
  • Month 6: Scars begin to fade and flatten.
  • Years 1–2: Scars become significantly lighter and blend more naturally with your skin tone.

Proper wound care and the use of scar-reduction products will improve the final appearance. Additionally, our clinic provides complimentary scar-reduction laser treatments as part of our signature aftercare plan.

A breast lift may make your breasts appear slightly smaller because excess skin is removed and the tissue is reshaped. If you wish to maintain your current size or increase it, you may consider combining the lift with breast augmentation.

Most patients can return to work within 7–10 days for non-strenuous roles. If your job involves heavy lifting or high physical exertion, a recovery period of 2–3 weeks may be required. Our medical team will provide personalized recommendations based on your specific job requirements.

A breast lift alone should not make your breasts feel hard or firm, as no foreign objects are inserted. You may experience some tightness initially due to swelling and tissue adjustment, but they will gradually become softer and look more natural over time.

Breast lift surgery is an effective solution for correcting breast ptosis, utilizing a variety of techniques that our surgeons tailor to each individual’s needs. At Rattinan Clinic, we prioritize detailed consultations and personalized treatment planning.

The most important thing is maintaining realistic expectations and fully understanding the advantages and disadvantages of the procedure. We recommend scheduling a consultation with our surgeons for a professional assessment and a treatment plan designed specifically for you.
